We are the GenISYS team – a group of researchers from across the UK who are working together to investigate experiences and outcomes for families who have a child with a genetic syndrome associated with intellectual disability (particularly Williams syndrome and autism).
The aim of the project is to explore how family members affect one another – for example, how the well-being of parents and the behavior of siblings affects the child with an intellectual disability, and how the characteristics of the child with an intellectual disability affect emotional well-being in parents and siblings. We are also interested in how siblings play together in the home, and how parents can best support these interactions.
